What Is Professional Teeth Whitening?

Professional teeth whitening uses clinically proven bleaching agents applied under controlled conditions to lighten the shade of your teeth safely and effectively. Unlike store bought strips or gels, the results are consistent, faster and significantly more dramatic.

At Coaldent, our specialist assesses your teeth before treatment to ensure whitening is suitable for you and recommends the right approach for your shade goals. We offer both in-clinic and take-home whitening options depending on your preference and lifestyle.

From Dr. Sahana Praveen,

Aesthetic Dental Specialist, Coaldent

“Teeth whitening is one of the most misunderstood treatments in cosmetic dentistry. Patients come in after months of using strips and kits with little to show for it, wondering if whitening even works for them. It does. The issue is almost always the product concentration, the application method, or the fact that no one assessed their teeth before they started.
Before I whiten anyone’s teeth, I look at the cause of the discolouration. Tea and coffee staining responds very differently to whitening than tetracycline staining or fluorosis. I also check whether any existing restorations will not change shade with whitening, so there are no surprises after treatment.
When it is done correctly and on the right candidate, the difference is significant. That is what we aim for at Coaldent — results that are noticeable, natural, and safe.”

How Your Teeth Whitening Works

01.

Shade Assessment

We photograph your teeth and record your current shade so we can measure the exact improvement after treatment.

02.

Pre-Treatment Check

We check your teeth and gums to confirm whitening is suitable. Any existing decay or sensitivity issues are addressed first.

03.

Gum Protection

A protective barrier is applied to your gums before the whitening agent is placed on your teeth.

04.

Whitening Application

The professional whitening gel is carefully applied to your teeth and activated for the required time to achieve your target shade.

05.

Shade Comparison

After treatment we compare your new shade against your starting point so you can see exactly how much your smile has brightened.

06.

Aftercare Guidance

We advise you on foods and habits to maintain your results for as long as possible and discuss top-up options if needed.

What I Check Before Whitening Your Teeth

A note from Dr. Sahana Praveen

Teeth whitening is safe and effective when done properly. The key word is “properly.” At Coaldent, I never start whitening without a full pre-treatment assessment. Here is what I look at and why it matters.

The cause of your discolouration Not all staining responds to whitening the same way. Surface stains from tea, coffee, and food are the most responsive. Intrinsic staining from old tetracycline use or developmental factors needs a different approach, sometimes veneers or bonding instead. I tell you upfront which category you fall into so we do not waste your time or money.

Your gum health If your gums are inflamed or there is active gum disease, whitening gel in contact with irritated tissue will cause unnecessary discomfort. We address gum health first if needed. This is a standard precaution most clinics skip.

Existing restorations in the smile zone Crowns, veneers, and composite fillings do not respond to whitening agents. If you have visible restorations in your front teeth, I factor that into your shade goal and realistic outcome. No surprises after treatment.

Tooth sensitivity history Patients with naturally sensitive teeth need a modified approach. I use a lower concentration gel with longer sessions rather than pushing to maximum concentration in one go. The result is the same but without the sensitivity spike.

Your starting shade I photograph and record your exact starting shade using a clinical shade guide. This lets us track the real improvement objectively, not just by how you feel standing in front of a mirror.

This is the difference between a treatment done on you and a treatment designed for you.

Questions Patients from Velachery Ask Before Whitening

Is professional whitening actually better than whitening toothpaste or strips?

Yes, by a significant margin. Over-the-counter products in India are limited to very low peroxide concentrations by regulation, which is why results are minimal even after weeks of use. Professional whitening uses clinically approved concentrations applied under controlled conditions. The difference in results is not subtle.

Can I whiten my teeth if I have sensitive teeth?

In most cases, yes. Sensitivity does not automatically disqualify you from whitening. Dr. Sahana adjusts the protocol for sensitive patients, using a gentler concentration and desensitising agents before and after treatment. Most sensitive-tooth patients experience little to no discomfort.

My teeth are yellow from years of drinking tea and filter coffee. Will whitening work?

Extrinsic staining from tea, coffee, and food is exactly what professional whitening is most effective against. Results for this type of discolouration are typically excellent, often 6 to 8 shades lighter in a single session.

I have a crown on one of my front teeth. Can I still whiten?

You can whiten your natural teeth, but the crown will not change shade. Dr. Sahana assesses this at your consultation and advises on how to approach your shade goal realistically. In some cases, replacing the crown to match your new whitened shade after treatment is an option worth considering.

How soon before an event should I get whitening done?

Ideally 1 to 2 weeks before your event. This gives any mild post-treatment sensitivity time to settle and allows your shade to stabilise. If you are whitening before a wedding or photoshoot, book early.

Is teeth whitening permanent?

No whitening treatment is permanent. Results last 1 to 2 years depending on your diet and habits. Avoiding tea, coffee, and tobacco significantly extends your results. A quick annual top-up at Coaldent keeps your shade consistent without starting from scratch each time.
